Some Phoenix Glass Co History The Phoenix rises For Phillipsburg, it was the advent of electricity as a lighting source that brought large-scale glassmaking to town. In late-1879, Andrew Howard secured a patent for a form of electrical wire insulation made of tubular glass. He built his plant along the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad in Phillipsburg and began operation on Aug. Glassmaking was an industry that was already well established in Beaver County. Both Beaver Falls and Rochester had multiple glass concerns, while many artisan glassmakers dotted the smaller towns. Everything from bottles to decanters, lighting fixtures, lamp chimneys, shades, globes and furniture accents were sought after by consumers. For Phillipsburg, it was the advent of electricity as a lighting source that brought large-scale glassmaking to town.

The tubular glass experiment was a brutal failure, but the plant did succeed with its production of lamp chimneys. In 1883, Phoenix began manufacturing art glass, headed up by English immigrant Joseph Webb Jr.

As electric lighting began to gain traction during the 1890s, Phoenix turned to the manufacturing of electric lighting parts, including light bulbs. Phillipsburg officially changed its name to Monaca in 1892, and Phoenix Glass was the undisputed top employer in town. By the turn of the century, Phoenix was operating four separate plants in Monaca and employing over 500 people. Monaca's population tripled during this period, mainly due to Phoenix Glass. Generational employment within families became commonplace during the 20th century.

During WWI and WWII, Phoenix Glass produced signal lights and other needed defense products. The company's commercial side excelled in development of lighting fixtures for hotels, churches and homes, as well as tableware and sculptured glassware. By 1940, Phoenix's catalog included over 10,000 different products!
